The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves went at it during Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals on Sunday, May 10, and while the scoreboard got attention during the game, Victor Wembanyama's ejection stole the show.
Wembanyama was handed his first career ejection Sunday following throwing an elbow at the jaw of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid during the second quarter and getting called out.
After Wembanyama hit Reid, he got a whistle. Following a video review of the hit, referee Zach Zarba stated that the foul was a flagrant 2 for excessive contact above the neck, and that meant an automatic ejection.
There was nobody more surprised by the ejection than Wembanyama. Sitting on the bench when the penalty was issued, he was caught on camera asking teammate Harrison Barnes, "What does that mean?"
Wembanyama gave high-fives to his Spurs teammates as he made his way out of the game, and the arena sound system played the Michael Jackson hit "Beat It," making for a dramatic exit.
Hoop Central's clip on X of Wembanyama's reaction is already at more than half a million views, and it's going viral. It's also garnering plenty of comments.
"He didn’t even know what flagrant two meant," one follower stated on X. "Spurs might've just lost the series," another stated.
The Spurs were 2-1 in the series following their 115-108 win in Game 3 on Friday, May 8.
So, Wembanyama is learning the hard way what life is like in the NBA. It's only his first ejection, though, so he's not a repeat offender yet.
