While Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has suggested this offseason that 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy will receive a legitimate opportunity to compete with free-agency signing Kyler Murray and veteran Carson Wentz for the team's starting quarterback job, numerous reports have indicated that the gig is really Murray's to lose.
It sounds like that isn't necessarily the case.
As Grant Gordon of the NFL's website shared on Sunday night, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero revealed during a recent appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show" that O’Connell and Co. will head into the summer with open minds regarding the club's quarterback situation.
"They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy," Pelissero explained. "And both these guys are going to go into this believing they're gonna win this job. I don't know, frankly, how friendly that quarterback room is going to be. It's going to be a very competitive quarterback room."
Such a plan makes sense for the Vikings, as they have no real reason to simply hand somebody the job this spring. McCarthy has thus far made just 10 regular-season starts since the Vikings selected him with the 10th overall pick of the 2024 draft, and he seemingly has no real value as a tradable asset coming off his performances from his second pro campaign. Discarding him now would be a poor business decision, considering the investment the Vikings made in him a couple of years ago.
Meanwhile, Murray put pen to paper on a league minimum deal with the Vikings earlier this offseason. Thus, his contract shouldn't guarantee him anything more than a roster spot.
One would think Wentz will be Minnesota's third-choice option at the position. Then again, perhaps the 33-year-old will thrive during training camp and the preseason due to his familiarity with O'Connell's offense.
"From everything that I've understood, it is truly wide open. They're keeping an open mind as a coaching staff," Pelissero added about the Vikings' quarterback battle.
Pelissero's update doesn't necessarily mean that Murray shouldn't be viewed as the favorite to win the job, but there is now at least a sign that McCarthy won't automatically be relegated to backup duties before he takes a snap during training camp.
