For Jayden Daniels, the honeymoon phase is officially over. After exploding onto the scene and quickly becoming the face of the Washington Commanders franchise, Daniels now enters a completely different level of expectation heading into the 2026 season.
Opposing defenses have a full year of film to study, Washington has aggressively built around its young quarterback, and the days of simply being happy the Commanders found their franchise player are long gone. In 2026, Daniels will be expected to win.
The element of surprise is gone
What presents the largest challenge for young quarterbacks is not their rookie year, but the following few years. Defensive coordinators will be poring over tape on Daniels. His tendencies under pressure, the reads he likes, his scrambling habits, and how Washington builds their offense to take advantage of his athleticism. That surprise element he once was able to utilize to keep defenses on their toes is now eliminated. Defenses from 2026 onward are going to be determined to push Daniels into difficult positions week in and week out rather than let him operate in space as much as possible.
Daniels will have more weapons at his disposal
To their credit, Washington realizes they need to support their young quarterback with as many offensive pieces as possible. During the 2026 NFL draft, they continued to infuse offense by drafting wide receiver Antonio Williams from Clemson in the third round, giving Daniels another young weapon to grow with alongside Terry McLaurin. Washington is still not done as they continue to be linked to free agent veterans and trade rumors concerning a summer pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk persist. The Commanders are no longer building toward a future; they are building for now.
Washington seemed aware of the need to improve their rushing game centered on Daniels for 2026. They brought in experienced runner Rachaad White as a free agent, giving them an additional threat that can affect the running game and the passing game out of the backfield. With Daniels’ own athleticism, the Commanders now have the ability to vary their play calling and not just solely depend on him to make a highlight reel play every drive. It may be a strength they need going forward as defenses now game plan to take Daniels away
The NFC East is only getting stronger
The pressure on Daniels will be magnified, as the NFC East all of a sudden is one of the deepest divisions in football. The Philadelphia Eagles still bring one of the NFL's most complete rosters into the season, and Dallas has completely rebuilt their defense after being one of the worst defenses in 2025. On defense alone, Dallas signed Caleb Downs, Rashan Gary, Jalen Thompson and Cobie Durant.
The New York Giants are coming off a massive overhaul of their own, with future Hall of Fame coach John Harbaugh at the helm and the addition of players like Arvell Reese, Tremaine Edmunds and Greg Newsome II. It is clear that nobody is looking past Washington this season, and as every team in the NFC East thinks it has significantly improved its offense and defense, the pressure is now on Daniels.
The pressure is higher than ever
For Daniels, 2026 is no longer about potential. It is about proving he can handle expectations that now come with being viewed as one of the NFL’s future stars. Washington has built around him, the division improved dramatically, and defenses are preparing specifically for him now. The excitement remains high, but so does the pressure.
