Patriots' Romeo Doubs reacts to ongoing trade rumors involving Eagles' A.J. Brown

When the New England Patriots and free-agent wide receiver Romeo Doubs agreed to a four-year contract reportedly worth up to $80M back in March, stories were heavily linking the Patriots with Philadelphia Eagles wantaway wideout A.J. Brown.

It continues to seem like a matter of when and not if the Patriots will land Brown this offseason. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Doubs addressed possibly losing targets to Brown later this fall.

"I was true to my word when I came here that there is no No. 1 guy in this offense," Doubs said, per Mark Daniels of MassLive. "So, whatever it is I have to do, whether it’s playing into the strength more or playing on the backside every here and now, or even having (revolving roles), which I’m really familiar with because I’ve done it in Green Bay also. I’m open to all roles. That’s just part of this league. You know, the more you can do, the more you can do for the team, the more you show for yourself, just things of that nature." 

The draft assets the Patriots will have to give up for Brown, not to mention his talent, basically guarantee that he will become New England's WR1 immediately after the trade goes through. Philadelphia isn't expected to trade Brown before June 1 because of reasons related to the salary cap, so there's still a chance that either team could back out of the deal before it's announced. 

Meanwhile, it's believed that the Patriots are Brown's desired landing spot due to his relationship with New England head coach Mike Vrabel. Vrabel was first Brown's head coach when the two were with the Tennessee Titans from 2019 through the 2021 season.

"I have a ton of respect for him," Doubs continued while speaking about Brown. "I mean, he’s been a dude in this league for quite a long time. I understand that when he first got in the league, Coach Vrabel was his coach. So again, I understand there are a lot of rumors going around." 

Doubs added that he'd "love to have" Brown with the Patriots. That's good, because there seemingly isn't anything Doubs could say over the next several weeks to keep New England from trading for Brown once the deal can go through.
