Under new management and a new head coach, the Miami Dolphins are already making their intentions about what type of team they're building clear. On Wednesday, general manager reportedly Jon-Eric Sullivan issued his first major extension since taking the job in January.
Miami and running back De'Von Achane, 24, agreed to a $64 million extension with $32 million in guaranteed money, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
After years of investing into a team built around the passing game, it now appears as if the Dolphins are prioritizing a strong rushing attack and versatility for their offense.
Part of why Achane is worth the money with that mindset is his ability to serve as a dynamic pass-catcher in addition to his production on the ground.
Achane is coming off the best season of his three-year career, too. Named a Pro Bowler for the first time, he ran for 1,350 yards (for an average of 5.7 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns during the 2025 season. He also had 67 receptions for 488 yards and four more scores. He even caught a career-high 78 passes for 592 yards in 2024.

544 carries
3,057 rushing yards
172 receptions
1,277 receiving yards
35 total TDs https://t.co/p7zNoyZLrK
In three NFL seasons as part of a Mike McDaniel offense that didn't cater to him, Achane has totaled 3,057 yards as a runner and 1,277 as a receiver with 35 combined touchdowns.
And even though it's essential to be able to throw the ball down the field in today's NFL, having a versatile running back who can do it all will help a quarterback and keep defenses honest.
Achane's individual prowess has even made him one of the most underrated draft picks of recent memory — he was selected with the 84th overall pick out of Texas A&M in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
And if Achane continues at his pace, his extension may end up being a bargain for the Dolphins.
