Further enhancing his already Hall of Fame-caliber career, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named the NBA's MVP on Sunday, earning the honor in back-to-back seasons. While not unanimous, Gilgeous-Alexander comfortably won his second MVP with 83 first-place votes.
The Oklahoma City Thunder superstar, who will now lead his team in the Western Conference Finals and try to add consecutive NBA Finals MVPs to his resume as well, won the award after completing an historic 2025-26 regular season.
Following up averaging 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.4 assists during the 2024-25 campaign, Gilgeous-Alexander put up 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.6 assists this season. With similar numbers, he was even more efficient in his MVP encore year.
He shot 55.3% from the field, taking his 51.3% mark from his prior season to another level, and 38.6% from three, also a tick higher than in his first MVP season.
To put Gilgeous-Alexander's season in perspective, he topped Michael Jordan as far as posting the highest field goal metric ever by a shooting guard who averaged 30 or more points per game.

Jordan set the new previous standard in 1990-91, registering 53.9% while averaging 31.5 points en route to his second MVP as well.
Based on what Gilgeous-Alexander has accomplished in eight seasons, besting Jordan isn't surprising. His next task is to continue bringing home the hardware and matching more of Jordan's resume when it comes to league MVPs, NBA championships and Finals MVPs.
And Gilgeous-Alexander, 27, won't have to wait long to attempt to end his second-straight year with all three of the top trophies, just like Jordan accomplished in 1991-92. He has one more series to win for a return trip to the NBA Finals, as the Western Conference Finals against the San Antonio Spurs tips off at 8:30 p.m. ET on Monday night from Oklahoma City's Paycom Center.
