Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and the Detroit Pistons are officially out of the postseason after falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Detroit on Sunday, 125-94.
Now, the Pistons are regrouping and trying to figure out how to move forward. They have some solid pieces in place, such as star player Cade Cunningham, but once again, they're not in the finals, and that hurts. That's especially the case considering that they worked so hard to make it to the semifinals by winning three games in a row against the Orlando Magic.
But that's all in the past, and it's time to look ahead to the future. So, will the Pistons' future involve Bickerstaff?
Whenever a team falls out of the playoffs, and there are questions as to why, people start to wonder if that coach's days are numbered. So, it's not a surprise that Monday morning, after the Detroit loss, that question emerged about Bickerstaff.
But, according to a report from The Athletic's Hunter Patterson, the coach has absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to his gig. The report states that the decision-makers' confidence in the coach "hasn't wavered," even after signing him to a contract extension during the playoffs.
"The Pistons view him as the coach of the future, and the expectation, per league sources, is for Bickerstaff to be around long term," Patterson stated. "He's established meaningful relationships throughout the locker room and has cultivated a culture that the organization believes is sustainable, given the team's youth."
So, it appears Bickerstaff is here to stay, and that comes as zero surprise. He's helped take this team from a 14-68 record in 2024 to where they are today, and Detroit isn't about to walk away from that showing of success.
