Positive news emerges regarding Oregon-Oregon State rivalry

Some of the best rivalries in college football have found themselves on the chopping block due to conference expansion and realignment over the past five years.

Heck, the Pac-12 as most knew it doesn't even exist anymore.

Speaking of the one-time "Conference of Champions," both the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers used to be a part of the Pac-12.

Their rivalry, typically referred to as the Civil War, dates back to 1894. These two bitter rivals have matched up 129 times in college football history. That's tied for the seventh-most meetings all time and is second-most at the FBS level.

The issue this series has run into is that Oregon has been a part of the Big Ten since 2024. Oregon State will "headline" the new-look Pac-12 in 2026 alongside Washington State.

Once a Power Five, the Pac-12 is now essentially a Group of Five conference.

That means the civil war between Oregon and Oregon State won't continue without intentional scheduling decisions, and the good news for college football fans is that this series is expected to continue through at least 2032.

The two schools announced four future matchups on Monday.

The tradition of Oregon vs. Oregon State is good for college football

They'll play at Oregon State in 2028 and in 2032, and at Oregon in 2029 and 2031. Interestingly, there is no matchup scheduled for the 2030 season as it currently stands,

This is good news for fans of the tradition of the sport, and most college football fans should agree that tradition is really what makes the sport special.

With that said, there will be a two-year gap in this rivalry starting in this upcoming season.

Oregon and Oregon State will not play each other in 2026 or in 2017, which marks the first break in the series since 1944.

Had this series not come back, it would have absolutely served as a black mark on this new era of college football. Thankfully, after a brief hiatus, the civil war will return in 2028.

We'll have to wait and see if the two sides can keep meeting past 2032, but this is a good start.
