Cleveland Browns pass-rusher Myles Garrett became the subject of renewed trade rumors even before it was learned earlier this offseason that he and the Browns had agreed to change when option bonuses attached to his contract would be due.
For a mailbag posted on Monday, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand offered an update regarding whether the club could acquire draft assets for Garrett at some point between June 1 and this fall's in-season trade deadline.
"Although I’m an advocate of auctioning Garrett to the highest bidder," Grossi wrote, "I do not believe a post-June 1 trade is in the works. I also think it’s doubtful – but not impossible — he would be traded at the Week 10 trade deadline. However, the story will continue to exist next year because of the modifications the Browns made to Garrett’s contract, with his cooperation."
Garrett signed a four-year, $160M contract extension that included $123.5M guaranteed to stay with the Browns last offseason not long after he went public with a trade request. He then became a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year after he set a new official single-season record of 23 sacks, but the Browns nevertheless finished the campaign with a record of 5-12.
More recently, first-year Browns head coach Todd Monken confirmed last week that he had not had any face-to-face interactions with Garrett since being hired by the franchise this past winter. For what it's worth, Grossi thinks that the Browns trading Garrett "would net multiple first-round picks in the 24-to-32 range because Garrett would not waive his no-trade clause to go to a non-contender."
NFL executives and some Cleveland media personalities have suggested that Garrett has been sending a message about his unhappiness with the state of the Browns by skipping voluntary workouts this spring. Grossi seems to believe Garrett will continue to stay away from the team until the 30-year-old is contractually obligated to report to the club in June.
"I think Garrett will show up for the first time at mandatory minicamp on June 9," Grossi added.
Assuming Grossi is right, Browns fans may have to wait until those mandatory minicamp sessions get underway to hear from Garrett about his whereabouts throughout springtime workouts.
