ESPN analyst doesn't think much of Vikings: 'What are people seeing?'

When the Minnesota Vikings acquired former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in free agency, many wondered what that meant for 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy, who has not lived up to expectations so far.

While McCarthy dealt with accuracy issues, a lack of touch and consistency — three areas the Vikings reportedly want him to improve in — Minnesota still finished last season 9-8 and brings in a more established veteran in Murray.

Michael Wilbon, “PTI” co-host and ESPN analyst, was asked on Thursday’s edition of “Get Up” what his expectation for the Vikings is going into the 2026 season. To put it simply, he is not anticipating much, especially from McCarthy.

Michael Wilbon is not expecting much from Vikings in 2026

“I heard all of this nonsense about Minnesota last year with J.J. McCarthy,” Wilbon said. “... But I’m looking at this going, ‘What are they seeing? What are people seeing?’”

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season after undergoing a full meniscus repair. Then, a combination of a high-ankle sprain, a concussion and a right hand injury forced him to miss seven games last season. When he did play, McCarthy was extremely inconsistent, completing just 57.6% of his throws and accounting for more interceptions (12) than TD passes (11).

Fortunately for McCarthy, the Vikings are not willing to give up on him yet amid what is expected to be “a true competition” at QB. With that said, Murray is still the favorite to land the starting role despite missing 11 games last season due to a foot injury.

To be fair, Murray has not exactly lived up to the hype that was placed on him as the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. However, Murray completed 68.8% of his passes for 3,851 yards with 21 TDs and 11 interceptions in his most recent full-time season in 2024. He also tacked on 572 rushing yards and five TDs.

That should make him the front-runner to land the QB1 job, with McCarthy as QB2 and veteran Carson Wentz, who appeared in five games with Minnesota last season, as the likely QB3.

The Vikings also added to their receiving room by signing former San Francisco 49ers WR Jauan Jennings in free agency, only strengthening what was already a talented roster.

Granted, Wilbon is a Chicago native and an avid Bears fan, so his statement should be taken with a grain of salt when you consider the Vikings are in the same division. Still, it is also fair to question how this Vikings team will perform and who will even be the starting QB when the season rolls around.

Murray will likely get it, but no one expected Minnesota to take McCarthy when it did in the draft and immediately make him the starter. That only adds to the unknowns and why this QB situation is one closely worth monitoring.
