The Detroit Lions have been through some hard times as of late. They went from No. 1 in the NFC North to last place in just one year's time, and then they went and hired Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator, which led to some questions.
So, it's about time the Lions catch a break, and that's happening. Detroit is getting praise and respect in a new NFL ranking of teams that could oust the Seattle Seahawks as the Super Bowl winners this season.
For a team that's never even been to the big game, the idea of winning it all seems almost like a dream. The Lions have a solid team and certainly have the talent to get there, but they've just fallen short amid their best window to get to the Super Bowl. But, that window hasn't closed.
In a piece for the NFL's official website, Dan Parr names the Lions as one of the teams that could go all the way and win it next season. He has them as the team with the No. 7 best chance to win it all.
"It was somewhat lost in Detroit's collapse late last year, but the Lions started 5-2 and looked like they were bound for a third straight playoff appearance," he states in the piece. "They are now tied for the NFL's fourth-longest active streak of consecutive winning seasons (four)."
He adds that even though the NFC North is "tough," the Lions' schedule is shaping up to be "one of the most favorable in the league."
"They catch a huge break by missing all of the NFC West heavyweights in the regular season — the Cardinals are the only team they play from the division," he adds.
But, it's not just about having an easy schedule. He also says that the Lions offense could be on fire, but only if the group "jells" and if they can get a healthy season from their main offensive playmakers. The defense, he adds, also has to stay healthy.
It's certainly the case that the Lions have what it takes to win the Super Bowl, even if their record didn't reflect that last season. What this team needs is to have the proper coaching, including smart offensive play-calling and, yes, to keep the roster healthy, especially toward the critical end of the season.
