Lions QB Jared Goff gets honest about Drew Petzing after offense stalled without Ben Johnson

The Detroit Lions didn't fare well after the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson following the 2024 season. They went from No. 1 in the NFC North with Johnson heading up the offense to last place in the first season after Johnson's departure to the Chicago Bears.

So, the pressure is on Dan Campbell and company for the 2026 season. They have to turn things around, and that's partly why they hired a new offensive coordinator in Drew Petzing, who most recently was with the Arizona Cardinals.

The centerpiece of any NFL offense is the quarterback. Now, Lions franchise quarterback Jared Goff is opening up about life without Johnson and how he feels about Petzing running the show.

Jared Goff opens up about his second OC after Ben Johnson

The Lions originally hired John Morton as offensive coordinator after Johnson left, and then they let him go following last season. Petzing takes his place, and Goff had nothing but glowing things to say about him speaking to the press on Friday during OTAs.

"It's been awesome," Goff said following the first open OTA practice. "He's been great to work with. He's got a lot of his own ideas, but he's also very open to listening to everything we (players) want to do."

Goff added: "It's been a fun synergy between he and I and our whole offensive staff. He's been great. He's done a great job. He's a great listener. He really puts the players first and it's awesome."

Now, is Goff going to say he doesn't like the new offensive coordinator? Of course not. But, his comments still mean something, because he genuinely seems to think it's been "fun" to work with Petzing and that the new coach has brought energy into the lineup. That's something that will benefit the Lions in September.
