The New York Knicks never wavered and stole Game 1 of the NBA Finals from the San Antonio Spurs.
Mitch Johnson's team led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but an offensive collapse and the Knicks' clutch shot-making paved the way for their 11th consecutive playoff win.
Victor Wembanyama was particularly erratic in the loss, going 6-for-21 from the floor and turning the ball over six times.
However, when asked about the loss, the former No. 1 pick wasn't rattled.
“It’s the same: Every team guards differently,” Wembanyama said, per ESPN’s Michael C. Wright. “I’m going to figure it out. I was bad tonight. It’s not more complicated than that.”
The French superstar admitted that he didn't play well. Nevertheless, that's also why he knows they can bounce back.
“When we play bad, when I play bad, is when we shoot ourselves in the foot,” Wembanyama said. “This is why I’m not worried. We’re going to be so much better. I’m going to be so much better.”
The Spurs lost homecourt advantage and may no longer be the clear-cut favorites to win this series.
The Knicks are well-rested and in a groove, playing with the confidence of a team that knows it can get the job done.
Even so, it's still early in the series, and even if the Spurs' youth and lack of postseason experience might come back to haunt them, this has the makings of a long series.
