Why Russell Wilson's overall career can make a case for the Hall of Fame

Ending his playing career on a whimper compared to the immense success he enjoyed at the start of it, Russell Wilson will now transition into the next chapter in his life.

But now that Wilson has officially announced his retirement and move to television — he will join CBS' NFL Today studio show — it's time to reflect back and look at the totality of his 14 seasons.

Russell Wilson has a case for the Hall of Fame despite how his career ended

While Wilson's final chapter may have been full of on the field struggles and embarrassing moments for a player of his caliber, his overall body of work can argue being worthy of a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In his final season in 2025 with the New York Giants, Wilson, 37, played in only six games, making three starts, and threw for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. However, he did show some signs of his past self in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He made the Pro Bowl, tossing for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns to just five picks in 11 games. His Steelers season followed a couple rough years in Denver, remembered for eventually being benched unceremoniously by Sean Payton.

Wilson enjoyed a decade of success with the Seahawks

But before any of that, Wilson made his name as the franchise quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson spent 10 seasons as Seattle's starting quarterback, being thrown to the fire immediately after being drafted in the third round in 2012.

As a rookie, Wilson stepped in and guided the Seahawks to a 12-5 record and then even won a playoff game. Building up his legacy as an efficient passer with the ability to move in the pocket, Wilson completed 64.1% of his passes for 3,118 yards to go along with 26 touchdowns. He made his first Pro Bowl and finished third in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

Wilson led the Seahawks to new heights

It was then in his second season when Wilson's play helped Seattle capture the first Super Bowl title in franchise history. Playing clean, he threw for 524 yards with three touchdowns and no picks throughout that postseason. The Seahawks would return to the Super Bowl in search of a repeat championship the next season before an errant throw after a controversial decision saw Seattle fall to the New England Patriots in the closing seconds of Super Bowl XLIX.

Over the next eight seasons, Wilson elevated his individual play to another level. He recorded four separate season with over 4,000 yards passing, five with at least 30 touchdown passes and one with 40 in 2020. Wilson also led the Seahawks back to the playoffs six more times. Twice Wilson was in the top five for Offensive Player of the Year.

Wilson's overall career stacks up against the best of his era and many all-time greats

In 10 season with the Seahawks, Wilson was credited with a 104-53-1 record and accumulated 37,059 passing yards, 292 touchdown passes with just 87 interceptions and a 101.8 quarterback rating.

Adding in his next four season, even though they were below his previous standard, Wilson retires with 46,966 yards through the air (16th all time), 5,568 more on the ground, 353 touchdown passes (12th all time) and 584 in total, 114 picks and a 99.3 rating.

Resume wise, Wilson was a 10-time Pro Bowler and a Walton Payton Man of the Year in addition to forever being regarded as a Super Bowl champion.

So no matter what happened after Wilson and the Seahawks parted ways, his full decade of success and complete career stack up favorably with some quarterbacks already enshrined and others expected to eventually be immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
