The San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk still don't see eye-to-eye, and chances are things are only going to get worse from here.
Aiyuk stirred the pot again by posting a picture of himself wearing a Washington Commanders hat.
He's close friends with Jayden Daniels and has been linked to a move to the nation's capital for a while now, though the Commanders have yet to make an offer for him — at least publicly.
Considering that, Commanders legend Brian Mitchell warned the team about even considering doing so. Talking on his “BMitch & Finlay,” he questioned Aiyuk's fitness and whether he can actually play.
“But the whole thing is this is a team over here [in the Commanders] who I think has been trying to move to another direction. Are you going to be played in this whole deal? How long are you going to wait? Do you know if he’s still going to be able to play like he played before? Because you better make sure if you wait and then you pull him in here,” Mitchell said.
While Aiyuk has done absolutely everything in his power to get on the 49ers' bad side, Mitchell thinks teams ultimately look the other way when players are good.
So, the fact that the 49ers have shut the door on any chance of him suiting up for them this season might be even more telling of his current status:
“Is that the next thing? So, yes, one thing I know and I want every fan to understand is this: If a guy can play, he’s going to get a chance. We have seen it in the NFL. No matter what has happened with some guys, they get opportunity after opportunity after opportunity,” he added.
Aiyuk has been out for nearly two years, and he wasn't necessarily living up to all the trouble he caused to get his big-money contract extension before his injury.
There have been major concerns about his rehab, and given how he's handled his career, teams would be wise to have no part of his business right now.
The 49ers will ultimately have no choice but to release him, and that might change the entire narrative, since the Commanders could simply sign him to a non-guaranteed, "prove it" deal.
Otherwise, giving anything to get him and his big contract might be a catastrophe.
