As recently as Tuesday, it was suggested that neither the New England Patriots nor wide receiver Stefon Diggs was all that interested in getting back together for a second season after the Patriots acquired A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in June.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel indicated that the update was accurate.
"I think we’re probably at the number we would need right now," Vrabel said about the Patriots' receiver situation, per Lauren Campbell of MassLive. "I wouldn’t say anything is off the table. We’d want to add anyone that can help us. I’m not gonna give a percentage on it, but I think we’re happy with where we’re at right now, with the numbers and the people in the receiver room."
On paper, one would think that the reigning AFC champions could use a weapon who has established chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye and who led the team last season with 85 receptions, 102 targets and 1,013 receiving yards. However, New England and receiver Romeo Doubs agreed to a four-year contract reportedly worth up to $80M back in March. Thus, it's thought that the Patriots may be more interested in trading a wideout on their current roster than in adding a big-name receiver who may not be thrilled with losing targets to the likes of Brown and Doubs.
"I appreciate Stefon as a person and as a player and what he did for us last year. I value that," Vrabel added. "He helped us win football games, helped us get to where we got. Right now, I don’t think that’s something we’re exploring. But I would never say no."
The "right now" portion of Vrabel's comments may lead one to believe that the Patriots could reach out to Diggs if the 32-year-old remains unsigned through a portion of August or if New England loses a receiver to an injury. However, one May story linked Diggs with at least four different receiver-needy teams that presumably could sign him at any point this summer.
