Recent reports suggested that 2025 rookie Shedeur Sanders has closed the supposed gap in the competition with veteran Deshaun Watson for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job, which head coach Todd Monken confirmed on Tuesday will last into the summer.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Sanders explained why he doesn't view Watson as a rival regarding the team's QB1 gig.
"I think the way how y'all look at things is different than how we look at things," Sanders said, as shared by Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. "We look at coming to practice every day, being the best player we can be as an individual and as a good teammate. Y'all look at it as a competition. That's not really nothing I'm focused on.
"I'm focused on developing as a player, doing everything, getting as comfortable as I can in the offense and the scheme and playing with that confidence I have."

It was first said in late April that Watson had "the inside track to be named" Cleveland's Week 1 starter. However, Sanders has reportedly shown "growth and improvement," and also an increased confidence, during the latter portions of springtime workouts. It's now believed that Monken could wait until after Cleveland's second preseason game on Aug. 22 to reveal the identity of his QB1.
"I think that's all I'm really looking for is trying to improve every day, whether it's mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually," Sanders continued. "I'm just trying to be a better person every day. And wherever that falls into place, it'll fall into place."
Also on Wednesday, Sanders was asked to evaluate how he feels the competition with Watson is going during the club's mandatory minicamp.
"I don’t think I’m a judge," Sanders responded, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "I’m not a judge."
Sanders has publicly said the right things regarding his situation ever since the Browns hired Monken this past winter. The second-year pro has also impressed his coaches to the point that Sanders now seems to have a legitimate chance to start Cleveland's Week 1 game at the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13.
