The San Antonio Spurs suffered one of the most infamous collapses in professional sports history on Wednesday night.
Mitch Johnson's team led by as many as 29 points and scored 76 first-half points, but couldn't hold on and ultimately lost 107-106.
Victor Wembanyama had a tough second half, missing 10 of his 12 shots and two crucial free throws late in the game.
When asked about his team's performance, the former No. 1 pick tipped his hat to the New York Knicks for wanting it more than them.
“Can’t really explain it right now. I don’t know. I think it’s just execution; greediness of some sort. We clearly weren’t the hungriest in the second half,” Wembanyama told the media.
Wembanyama got off to a strong start, getting Karl-Anthony Towns into foul trouble and outplaying Mitchell Robinson.
Then, a series of miscues and self-inflicted wounds cost his team a game that should've been in the bag midway through the third quarter.
The Spurs are now heading back home facing elimination and a 3-1 series deficit. However, the French superstar knows there's still plenty of basketball to be played.
“What’s going through my mind right now, I think it’s going one of two ways. One of two ways, a bad one and a good one. The bad one would be giving up; the good one would be getting stronger through this, getting more together, and I know this is what we’re going to do,” Wembanyama added.
Only one team has ever come back from a 3-1 series deficit in the NBA Finals, so Johnson's team is in for a tall order.
That said, there's a precedent, and if Wembanyama wants to be considered one of the all-time greats, this will certainly be the perfect opportunity to get the legend going.
