Whatever did and/or didn't happen regarding the relationship involving Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and wide receiver A.J. Brown over the past couple of seasons has generated numerous articles and sports-talk discussions.
The Eagles officially traded Brown to the New England Patriots via a deal that was announced on June 1. While it's still early into Brown's New England tenure, quarterback Drake Maye is among the Patriots players who are impressed by what they have thus far seen.
"It’s hard not to get excited," Maye said about the Patriots adding Brown, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "What a player he is. You start off the bat, what a great teammate so far. I mean, he’s eager to learn, he’s great with the guys in the locker room, and just look forward to playing with a guy of that caliber. I know he’s been a great player in this league. Everywhere he’s gone, he’s been a guy that you see on 'SportsCenter' the next day making plays, scoring."
Whether or not Brown will remain a "great teammate" through at least the end of the upcoming season shall be seen. After all, it seems like some Eagles players are downright relieved that they no longer have to worry about dealing with Brown-related sagas moving forward.
Maye is currently focused on what Brown, a one-time Super Bowl champion, can offer the team that lost Super Bowl LX in February of this year.
"The best thing about him is he’s been a winner," Maye said about Brown. "He knows what it’s like to win. And, obviously, adds something to that room that…we were kinda looking for. That’s the best thing I think [Stefon Diggs] provided for us last year, and [we have] guys that are growing in their roles. But just coming in with that stature, his ability, and his size — just the respect that you walk in there with that kind of Stef had, A.J.’s got it, too."
Over the past two seasons, Brown publicly voiced frustrations over his role in the Philadelphia offense and about a perceived lack of targets during certain contests. On Wednesday, Maye indicated he understands it's his job to do all he can to keep Brown happy for as long as possible.
"It’s really just on me to give him a chance to touch it, because more times than not, he’s going to bring it in," Maye added about tossing footballs to Brown on gamedays. "So, that’s exciting. And just knowing that a slant or something, a quick out — something that you can just give him the ball, he can break some tackles. He’s tough to tackle, and guys don’t want to tackle him."
Perhaps Maye and Brown will eventually become best friends as teammates if they help the Patriots win a Super Bowl championship as soon as this coming February.
