Back in late May, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes acknowledged that it was still far too early to say for sure if he'll be able to play in Kansas City's season-opening "Monday Night Football" home game versus the rival Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
Mahomes is working to return from the torn ACL and torn LCL he suffered this past December, and he was able to participate in drills throughout organized team activity practices and the club's mandatory minicamp this week. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid touched upon what Mahomes may be able to do when training-camp practices get underway in late July.
According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Reid was sure to note that "the healing process has to keep taking place" before he can make any guarantees about Mahomes' participation during training camp.
"I think we’ll be OK there as we go forward," Reid added. "...It looks like he’s going to be able to do some things during camp."
Reid has repeatedly stopped short of saying more about Mahomes' ongoing recovery beyond where the quarterback is at the time the comments are made. That said, numerous reports shared throughout the spring have indicated that people throughout the NFL would be downright shocked if Mahomes doesn't take the field for the Week 1 prime-time showdown.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs showed they have no concerns about Mahomes' long-term future when they reworked his current contract to extend him through the 2033 season.
"He did it out here, so I would presume in 40 days, he’ll be even better than that," Reid added about where Mahomes may be at the start of training camp. "We’ll see where it goes. You go through peaks and valleys with this thing, where you might plateau for a little bit. You never know when those are gonna take place, but, so far, it’s been a steady climb up the hill."
Barring an unexpected setback, it sounds like Mahomes should be atop that figurative hill before the night of Sept. 14 arrives.
