The Vegas Golden Knights are going back home for Game 6 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final facing elimination after dropping a 4-2 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 on Thursday night. Head coach John Tortorella is planning on bringing the series back to Raleigh for a winner-take-all Game 7 next Wednesday.
How confident is he in that?
He said on Thursday that he is leaving his clothes in his hotel room in anticipation of returning.
That is about as close to a guarantee as you can get from a head coach without the head coach actually saying the words "I guarantee we are going to win."
But the message is clear: He expects a win on Sunday night.
"We’ll be back here…. I’m going to leave my clothes here, that’s for sure. They'll be in the hotel."

That's a bold claim, and it also brings up far less important questions regarding the booking practices of teams when it comes to hotels in a playoff series. Do they just have a block of rooms for the entire two-and-a-half week stretch of the series so that nobody else can rent them out? Possibly. Or he's just making a statement to show his confidence.
Whether it's a literal statement or a figurative statement, the one thing that would help get them back to Carolina for Game 7 would be better goaltending.
They might have a chance to get that if they made a switch to Adin Hill after Carter Hart has allowed at least four goals in each of the first five games of the series. Tortorella was asked on Thursday night if he had any thoughts of putting in Hill for the third period after Hart had allowed three goals in the third period.
He did not.
He also made that emphatically clear.
I asked John Tortorella if he had considered going to Adin Hill in the 3rd period:

“Christ, that could be the stupidest question I’ve heard.”
Hart has a sub-.870 save percentage for the series and is minus-4.5 in terms of goals saved above expected. While it may not be all his fault, he is simply not playing well enough to give Vegas a chance.
Tortorella does not seem to care.
He also seems to believe Hart is his best chance to get back to Raleigh to collect his clothes.
