Happy 52nd birthday to two-time American League All-Star, 2009 World Series MVP and New York Yankees fan-favorite, Hideki Matsui!
Matsui signed with the Yankees ahead of the 2003 season at 29 years old after a successful career in the Japanese professional league, where he was a nine-time All-Star, three-time champion.
“Godzilla,” would hit 140 home runs in seven seasons with the Yankees making the All-Star game in his first two seasons and not missing a single game from 2003-2005. His most iconic moments in pinstripes came in the 2009 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, when he drove in six of the Yankees seven runs in the 7-3 series clinching win to be named World Series MVP.
Despite the honor, 2009 was Matsui’s final season in the Bronx. He played a season each with the Angels and A’s before playing the final 34 games of his MLB career with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the players to drive in at least five runs in one World Series game can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
