The long-awaited return of Alejandro Kirk finally happened on Friday night against the New York Yankees, and he provided an immediate offensive impact for the Toronto Blue Jays.
In Kirk’s career against the Yankees, he owns a .262 batting average with 54 hits, six home runs and 22 runs scored across 62 games.
Impressively, Kirk drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double to cash in Ernie Clement in the bottom of the first inning. He also recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-3 for the Blue Jays.
But Kirk also made an immediate impact behind the plate, making his first successful ABS challenge on the first pitch of the game. Kirk finished off an eventful night going 3-for-3 with three hits, two RBI and a walk in the Blue Jays' 8-5 victory over the Bronx Bombers.

A huge performance and return from Kirk is exactly what the Blue Jays needed. The 27-year-old is coming off a strong 2025 All-Star campaign where he boasted a .282 batting average, with 127 hits, 15 home runs and 76 RBIs.
His impact comes as no surprise, as Kirk showed positive signs during his rehab assignments. During his six-game rehab assignment, despite a low .167 batting average (3-for-18), he did crush a home run and one double.
During Kirk’s absence, the Blue Jays were lucky to have rookie catcher Brandon Valenzuela fill in, and he did a remarkable job. Such a remarkable job that his performance behind the dish and at the plate had him remain in the majors, with veteran Tyler Heineman getting designated for assignment. A move that many fans were yearning for but didn’t think would unfold. But Kirk and Valenzuela provide a unique combination of a veteran and rookie that complement each other's strong attributes.
Another significant moment in the game was when Kirk helped Mason Fluharty, who came on in relief for Trey Yesavage in the top of the sixth inning, recording two big outs, where the Yankees were threatening with runners on second and third.
While the Yankees did end up scoring two runs on a single from Trent Grisham, a lot more runs could have been scored to keep the inning even more alive if they hadn’t gotten those first two quick outs.
All in all, having Captain Kirk back provided the Blue Jays with a spark, but more importantly, it brought them their primary All-Star catcher. With the catching tandem of both Kirk and Valenzuela, the Blue Jays are looking to get back to .500 (34-36). The last time they reached .500 was on May 29, when they made a wild 6-5 comeback victory against the Baltimore Orioles.
