Mauricio Pochettino moved quickly to calm concern over Christian Pulisic after the United States star came off during the World Cup win over Paraguay.
The USMNT opened its Group D campaign at SoFi Stadium with the kind of result that can settle early tournament nerves.
But Pulisic’s substitution gave the night a more serious subplot, especially with the United States needing its captain and most reliable attacker fit for the rest of the group stage.
As Tom Bogert reported, Pochettino told FOX that Pulisic had taken a kick to the calf before the decision was made not to gamble with him.
The USMNT coach explained: “Pulisic took a kick in his calf and then he started to feel tight and we didn’t want to take any risk. “
Pochettino then added that the issue had made it difficult for Pulisic to keep going, but the first read was not panic: “It was difficult for him to work but we hope that it is not a big issue and he’s ready for the next one.”
Pulisic’s own message also helped lower the concern. Reports said that the forward said he was subbed off as a precaution, which points more toward careful tournament management than an obvious serious injury.
The timing matters because calf tightness can become risky if a player tries to push through it. In a group-stage opener, especially with USA already in control, protecting Pulisic made sense.
The injury update came after a strong American performance against Paraguay in Los Angeles.
USA started quickly, with Damián Bobadilla’s own goal giving the hosts an early lead. Folarin Balogun then played a major role in attack, scoring twice as the United States pulled away.
Gio Reyna added a late goal, while Paraguay’s response was not enough to stop the USMNT from opening with a 4-1 win.
The only real downside was Pulisic’s fitness watch. He remains the player who changes the ceiling of this team because of his movement, one-on-one threat, and experience in major moments.
USA face Australia next in Seattle, and that is why Pochettino’s update matters. A minor calf knock is manageable. A setback to Pulisic would change the mood around a promising start.
For now, the message is cautious optimism. Pulisic was protected, not ruled out.
