Aaron Boone responds to Aroldis Chapman's demand about possible Yankees reunion

Given how things ended between them, it was almost impossible to believe Aroldis Chapman would ever play another game for the New York Yankees.

Aaron Boone left him off the postseason roster back in 2022 after he missed a workout with an unexcused absence, and after a string of disappointing performances, it was clear that they needed to move on from him.

Fast forward to today, and Chapman is back in top shape as one of the best closers in the game, all while playing for the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox are likely to be sellers at the Aug. 3 trade deadline, and Chapman recently opened up on the rumors linking him back to a return to the Bronx.

Notably, he's open to the idea, as long as GM Brian Cashman apologizes. Boone, however, begs to differ.

Aaron Boone says Aroldis Chapman doesn't deserve an apology

“I made the decision based on a lot of things and thought to leave him off, because that was the right thing to do for our club at the time,” Boone said when asked about the incident, per ESPN.

Then, when asked directly whether he thought the Yankees owed him an apology, he bluntly said 'no.' Of course, that doesn't mean he doesn't like Chapman as a player or a person or that he wouldn't bring him back if the situation asks for it:

“Chappy apologized, and really, it’s water under the bridge for me. I love Chappy; I have a really good relationship with him to this day. But the end of the ’22 season is what it was. He wasn’t there, and I made the decision that I didn’t think was best for him to come back at that point,” he added.

Chapman will be a free agent at the end of the season and has a $13 million player option for 2027. He's converted all 13 of his save opportunities this year, and with the Yankees potentially looking to bolster the bullpen, both parties may have to bury the hatchet soon.
