Cowboys, Jerry Jones finally have 'America's Team' back in 2026

The Dallas Cowboys don't usually make big, splashy moves in the offseason, and that's been one of the weaknesses of Jerry Jones and this team. But, that wasn't the story during the offseason for Jones and company, and that's a good thing.

The Cowboys are supposed to be "America's Team." But, it's hard for America to root for a team that isn't making big moves to get better. During this offseason, Jones took some significant steps to advance this team, and that's going to pay off when September rolls around.

Jerry Jones and Cowboys finally have "America's Team" again — here's why

First, Jones made moves in the NFL draft that show he means business for this team. The biggest was trading up in the NFL draft to secure Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, who's an exceptional talent. Downs was an All-American at Ohio State and is a starter-ready rookie. He'll make a quick and immediate impact on the Cowboys' secondary right where they need it. Jones could have let him slip away, but he made sure to secure Downs and took a risk, which is refreshing.

Secondly, Jones took care of business on the edge-rusher position. It's still not a perfect situation, but it's good. Perhaps even better than good. The team acquired veteran edge rusher Rashan Gary during the offseason, and he'll make a big difference, on top of rookie guys Malachi Lawrence, Jaishawn Barham and LT Overton.

Finally, Jones got raves for signing cornerback Cobie Durant. He's on a one-year deal and brings a veteran presence to the defense.

With these new pieces in place, there's no reason the Cowboys can't be "America's Team" once again in 2026. September can't get here soon enough.
