Will Patriots make a key schematic change to help Drake Maye?

Josh McDaniels is one of the most renowned and accomplished offensive coordinators in recent NFL history.

His gap-and-counter-based offense has helped the New England Patriots win six Super Bowl rings, and while Tom Brady also had plenty to do with that, he deserves his flowers.

That's why asking him to change his ways to help accommodate Drake Maye might be a tall order.

But, according to Patriots.com writer Evan Lazar, personnel chief Eliot Wolf has hinted at running more bootlegs and changing pass protection for Maye, as they weren't necessarily at their best when Maye rolled out of the pocket.

The Patriots want to run more bootlegs for Drake Maye

“The Patriots ranked ninth in the NFL in designed rollout rate (9.4%). The Pats efficiency on movement plays produced the ninth-best EPA per play in the regular season (+0.25), but that plummeted to -0.58 EPA per play against better defenses in the playoffs,” explained Lazar.

Maye has already shown that he can make every throw in the book, and he's gotten away with some wild throws on the move.

The potential and physical tools are there, and calling more bootlegs for him will only help him get into a rhythm and finely tune that aspect of his game.

Maye was constantly under heavy pressure when he rolled out of the pocket. Opposing defenses didn't care about play-fakes because they didn't run them often enough for them to become an actual factor; they prepared to stop what they had seen on tape.

Asking McDaniels to change how he does things at this point in his career might not be the wisest way to maximize his value.

Nevertheless, great coaches adjust to their personnel and not the other way around.

And as much as Maye thrived in that power-based offense, not accommodating the system to his skills would be a disservice.
