One report indicated that neither Kyler Murray nor J.J. McCarthy "performed drastically better than the other" during Minnesota Vikings' springtime workouts open to media members.
On Tuesday, Vikings reporter Kevin Seifert of ESPN shared an update on the competition for the team's starting quarterback job that will resume once training camp begins in late July.
"The basic premise of the Vikings' quarterback competition did not appear to flip," Seifert wrote. "Murray remains the favorite to win the starting job in training camp, even as incumbent J.J. McCarthy made clear moves to stabilize his rocky 2025 performance. Murray's advantage in arm talent -- throwing to a difficult spot, varying the speeds and trajectories of his passes -- was evident. And what might be the most significant differentiator in the competition -- his elite-level running ability -- was dormant during the non-contact drills NFL teams use during spring practices."
Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said the competition that the timeline "does involve making sure we get our starter ready to go" for Week 1 of the regular season. According to Seifert, Murray and McCarthy should both take significant snaps during Minnesota's preseason opener at the New York Giants on Aug. 15. It's too early to guess when and how much the signal-callers will play during that contest.
Superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson was among the Vikings players who spoke carefully about the team's quarterback battle in recent weeks. It sounds like neither Jefferson nor his teammates will be consulted as O'Connell and the coaching staff discuss which quarterback will enter September atop the depth chart later this summer.
"Players won't get much of a say in O'Connell's final decision, if any, and their personal feelings are minimally relevant to who is best equipped to run the Vikings' offense," Seifert added. "None of the players who spoke with reporters during the five open offseason sessions expressed a favorite. Jefferson went out of his way to say he planned to work with both quarterbacks during his summer break. But just as a function of time spent together, all of them know and understand McCarthy better than they do Murray. Take that for what it's worth."
Also on Tuesday, Alec Lewis of The Athletic noted that "executives and evaluators around the NFL think Murray will begin the season under center" for the Vikings. McCarthy should receive opportunities to prove such people wrong through at least the afternoon of Aug. 15.
