Multiple teams reportedly have major Brendan Sorsby concern after supplemental draft decision

Shortly after it was learned on Monday night that Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby plans to enter this year's supplemental draft for the NFL, ESPN's Ben Solak mentioned 10 teams that could potentially become landing spots for the polarizing prospect.

For a piece published early Tuesday morning, NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk shared at least one reason why some teams may think twice about taking a flier on Sorsby in July.

Brendan Sorsby facing "significant suspension" from NFL?

"We’re told that multiple teams are concerned that [NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell] will impose a significant suspension on Sorsby," Florio revealed

Back in 2011, then-Raiders rookie quarterback Terrelle Pryor had to serve a five-game suspension related to his alleged involvement in a cash-for-memorabilia scandal. Per the NFL's website, Goodell said at that time that he felt "allowing players to secure their own ineligibility for college play in order to avoid previously determined disciplinary consequences for admitted conduct reflects poorly not on college football -- which acted to discipline the transgressor -- but on the NFL, by making it into a sanctuary where a player cannot only avoid the consequences of his conduct, but be paid for doing so."

Florio wrote that "the NFL could apply that same reasoning to Sorsby, under the notion that Sorsby ultimately used the NFL as a 'sanctuary where a player cannot only avoid the consequences of his conduct.'"

As for Sorsby, he checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction earlier this spring. He was previously handed a two-game suspension related to the fact that he admitted to gambling on Indiana games when he was a member of that program and on other sports.

Brendan Sorsby's attorney is ready for a fight

The Cleveland Browns are reportedly among the teams that "are unlikely to bid on" Sorsby during the supplemental draft. It's unclear how many other quarterback-needy clubs may pass on Sorsby.

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation," Florio added, "[attorney Jeffrey Kessler] has already begun to attempt to ensure that the league won’t impose roadblocks on Sorsby’s effort to join the NFL. The league could try to reject his application for the supplemental draft. The league could try to suspend Sorsby, concocting an outcome rooted in the integrity of the NFL’s gambling policies."

The perception exists that Sorsby’s camp learned that at least one team will take him in the supplemental draft. The identity of that club was a mystery to outsiders as of the morning of June 16.
