WNBA legend Sue Bird facing backlash over Caitlin Clark comments

WNBA Hall of Famer Sue Bird was part of Peacock’s broadcast as Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever defeated the Connecticut Sun, 85-75.

Bird is now facing significant pushback from fans after her postgame comments about Clark.

“It’s a crazy stat that exists where when Caitling shoots better than 40%, they win,” Bird said. “And 40% is achievable. That should be like what she averages on the year. So whenever she shoots well, they play well.

“And I think that just speaks to shot selection, ball movement. She got some, some easier looks … on Connecticut’s defense.”

Clark finished with a game-high 25 points in the win. She shot 10-of-17 overall, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.

Fans accuse Sue Bird of hating on Caitlin Clark

Clark fans were quick to call Bird out for what she said after the game. The supporters focused on how Bird seemed to credit Clark’s big night to the Sun’s poor defense rather than the Fever superstar’s strong performance.

“sue bird always been a clark hater and always will be .. she’s just mad that she played in front of a few hundred ppl a game,” a comment on X read.

“Sue know we gon wipe her out of the history books so I get it ” another said.

“This is why I am finding it very heard to watch the WNBA anymore, tons of bias from the announcers and analysts that is just pure BS,” a user wrote.

“That’s some BS from Sue,” declared a viewer.

“Sue’s a flag that blows whichever direction the wind is going – and in most WNBA media circles that’s against Clark. And why shouldn’t it be? Better to keep the original 600K legacy base fans happy w/ low-IQ banter than the 3M+ that came to the W because of 1 person,” said another.

“Sue Bird is envious brotha. All old heads get defensive when younger and better talent come to push them down the All-Time record books lol,” a reaction read.

Either way, Clark is now shooting above 40% on the season. She’s up to 40.7% on 15.8 attempts per game. She’s also knocking down 2.7 triples a night on a 34.0% clip. In 12 games played, the two-time All-Star is averaging a career-high 20.3 points.

The Fever won its third straight game by taking down the Sun. They will be looking to make it four wins in a row when they return to action on Tuesday against the Toronto Tempo.
