New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn seemed to leave the door open on Tuesday for the team to possibly grab controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby in this year's supplemental draft for the NFL. That understandably sparked all kinds of reactions among Jets fans and local sports-media personalities.
Journeyman Geno Smith is set to serve as the Jets' 2026 Week 1 QB1, while 2026 fourth-round draft pick Cade Klubnik is also on the team's roster. On Wednesday, SNY's Lucas Hutcherson touched upon the Jets' Sorsby-related decision.
"The Jets will probably pass on the opportunity to land Sorsby because adding him could do more to muddy the waters at the quarterback position than it does to create clarity," Hutcherson wrote. "Perhaps there will be a price-point at which they consider the value is too good to pass up, so they could bid a low pick, but it seems likely at least one team will give up more than the Jets are prepared to in order to land a possible Day 1 talent."
Former Jets offensive lineman and current analyst Damien Woody suggested certain players won't welcome Sorsby with open arms after the signal-caller previously admitted to gambling on Indiana games, along with other sporting events, when he was with that school. Meanwhile, some seem to believe the Jets could be bad enough later this year to "earn" the top pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. That asset could be used to acquire a prospect who almost certainly will be rated higher than Sorsby has been by analysts this week.
Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic expanded on why the Jets may stick with their current quarterback situation through at least the summer.
"It’s debatable as to whether or not Sorsby is a better prospect than Klubnik today," Baumgardner explained. "They’re both 22 years old, and Klubnik’s college career was equal to, or more impressive than, Sorsby’s. Klubnik also doesn’t come with the off-field baggage Sorsby is currently carrying. New York has a chance to see what Klubnik can give the franchise this year, and if that’s nothing, it’ll still be in a great spot to take a talent at the top of the 2027 draft."
Taking Sorsby in the supplemental draft would cost the Jets their corresponding pick in next year’s draft. It sounds like some are convinced that's a price the Jets won't be willing to pay unless Sorsby can be acquired via a mid- or late-round pick.
