Team Penske technically didn't sign Jesse Love on Wednesday, but it might as well have.
Love, the defending NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series champion, was announced as the new driver of the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford for 2027 in light of the impending departure of Josh Berry.
WBR has had an alliance with Penske since 2015, operating as an affiliate of the organization. Penske's current Cup Series lineup is a solid one in terms of retention. Ryan Blaney, 32, drove for the Wood Brothers from 2015-17 and has been with Penske since 2018. He's not going anywhere anytime soon, as the 2023 Cup Series champion has emerged as one of the faces of modern NASCAR.
Austin Cindric, the 2020 O'Reilly Series champion, also isn't likely to leave Penske soon. The 27-year-old has driven for Penske since 2018, and his father, Tim Cindric, was a longtime IndyCar executive for the organization and now works as a strategist for Penske IndyCar driver Scott McLaughlin.
Perhaps the biggest question mark in Penske's current lineup is 36-year-old Joey Logano, a three-time Cup champion and future Hall of Famer who would only leave Penske if he were to retire.
Logano stepping away likely won't happen until he at least reaches age 40, but the 21-year-old Love is a fantastic choice to step in for Logano when the time comes. But in the time before that occurs, he has the opportunity to win races with a historic organization that should provide him with fast race cars once Ford begins to figure out the new body it will receive in 2027.
There's also a nugget in the press release from WBR announcing Love's signing that hints at the potential for a long-term relationship between Love and Penske.
"I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Wood Brothers Racing, Team Penske and Ford Racing for believing in me," Love said in the release.
Name-dropping Penske specifically seems to be an acknowledgement that it's not just the Wood Brothers, but Team Penske as well, that is invested in Love as he prepares for his rookie season of NASCAR Cup Series competition.
