Justin Thomas is heading into the weekend at the U.S. Open in very high spirits after a two-under 68 in Round 2.
Thomas started his week at Shinnecock Hills with a one-over 71, which has helped him finish his first two days within the top 10.
The Long Island venue has proved difficult for the majority of the field, with windy conditions causing particular struggles on day one.
But Thomas has battled Shinnecock Hills well as he seeks to add to his two major championship wins, both of which have arrived at the PGA Championship.
The American is in a great position to do that at the US Open, which he thinks is heading for a big change over the weekend.
Having carded a birdie on his final hole on Friday, Thomas was asked after his round about using that momentum across Saturday and Sunday to compete for the title.
He said: “Yeah, just keep doing what I’m doing.
“I would expect to see a completely different golf course this weekend, definitely not as soft.
“Probably they’re going to let it go a little bit more and let it play firmer and faster.
“I think, honestly, a lot of it will have to do with how the course plays.
“I’m just going to kind of see what it’s like.
“More than anything, I feel like I’ve played well and am playing well.
“I just need to keep doing what I’m doing.”
He also commented: “I mean, it was definitely a different wind condition.
“I feel like we got fortunate yesterday in terms of what we were playing in, but I mean, the course is still very soft.
“I mean, it’s obviously still Shinnecock.
“It’s very hard, but it’s been friendly the first two days for how it can play.
“I just played really well and made some putts and kind of took advantage of some chances when I had them.”
Thomas has made seven birdies from his 36 holes so far, along with 23 pars and six bogeys.
Thomas certainly deserves plenty of credit for his efforts at Shinnecock Hills, and indeed throughout the 2026 season.
The 33-year-old only began his campaign in March after undergoing back surgery towards the end of last year.
The two-time major champion started off by missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but he has impressively made all nine cuts since.
Moreover, Thomas has recorded one top five and two top 10 finishes, with another very positive result now looking very likely at the US Open.
It remains to be seen how Shinnecock will play over the weekend, but the American should be quietly confident about still being in and around the top of the leaderboard by the time the tournament concludes.
However, recent history is not on his side at the event, with Thomas having missed the cut in each of the last three years.
