Luka Doncic makes Lakers’ offseason wishlist perfectly clear

Luka Doncic became a superstar almost immediately when he joined the NBA back in 2018, making the playoffs in his second season and giving the Los Angeles Clippers a real scare in his first postseason series. He would make his first conference finals appearance two years after that and reached his first NBA Finals back in 2024 with the Dallas Mavericks.

Since being shipped off to the Los Angeles Lakers, Doncic hasn’t even come close to getting back there, and he’s tired of waiting. ESPN insider Dave McMenamin recently published a story that outlined the offseason for Los Angeles, and the piece contained a section dedicated to the Slovenian star.

Apparently, the team has been drilling it into his head that this will be the summer they go all in on improving the roster, and Doncic already has an idea of how to operate. One of McMenamin’s sources told him that the star point guard’s “first and foremost desire is an A-list center.”

Luke Doncic would thrive with the right center

There is no indication as to who that could be, but Doncic has thrived most in the past when he has an athletic, defensive-minded center next to him. There aren’t many great options in free agency, but tons of teams around the league are kicking the tires on a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo as the Milwaukee Bucks prepare to unload him this offseason.

He hasn’t played center much in his career, but he certainly has the size, athleticism and strength to do it. It would be difficult to bring in the two-time MVP, but he would be a seamless fit next to Doncic, and they would instantly become one of the best pick-and-roll threats in the league.

When the Lakers star had his ideal type of big men in Dallas, it was the season they went to the Finals. He knows the type of team he needs around him, and it sounds like he is trying to give Los Angeles some guidance.

Doncic also spoke about his need for shooters in a recent interview, which was something he also had in 2024.

The Lakers can create a ton of cap flexibility this offseason by letting go of LeBron James and Austin Reaves, but Doncic likely wants at least one of them back.

They are going to have to get creative if they want to put a championship contender around their face of the franchise. But this is the type of pressure you place on yourself by promising a player you’ll get him a contending team and letting it be known that he is the leader of the team going forward.
