The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with often-criticized defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus this past January and ultimately replaced him by hiring former Philadelphia Eagles defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Christian Parker.
While speaking with reporters on Thursday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed that Parker had an interesting way of trying to get under the skin of certain Dallas offensive players during springtime practices.
"I would say the [trash] talking from Christian Parker is a little different than what we had last year," Schottenheimer explained, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' website. "The guys feed off of it in a good way… It's been fun to watch that. He'll stir up [wide receiver CeeDee Lamb], [receiver George Pickens] and [quarterback Dak Prescott] and those guys. I think we're in a really good spot."
Schottenheimer and Co. needed to change multiple aspects of the Dallas defense after that unit routinely failed the team's offense throughout the 2025 campaign. ESPN stats show that the Cowboys ended last season ranked last in the NFL with an average of 30.1 points surrendered per game and 30th with an average of 377.0 yards allowed per contest.
During the offseason, Dallas added former Green Bay Packers pass-rusher Rashan Gary, safeties Jalen Thompson and P.J. Locke, cornerback Cobie Durant, defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia and linebacker Tyrus Wheat to the roster ahead of the draft. The Cowboys then drafted promising safety Caleb Downs, pass-rusher Malachi Lawrence, cornerback Devin Moore, defensive lineman LT Overton and linebacker Jaishawn Barham.
"I believe defense wins championships," Schottenheimer added about Parker's trash talk during his comments. "I do believe that. And so if the defense is giving up headaches, that's fine by me."
Ideally, the Dallas defense and offense will cause opposing teams plenty of headaches throughout the upcoming season. With the Cowboys coming off a 7-9-1 campaign, it's fair to wonder if team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has a postseason-or-bust mandate hovering over Schottenheimer's job status following the team's offseason program.
