Fever coach Stephanie White facing backlash after big Caitlin Clark news

The long wait is finally over for Caitlin Clark fans. This is after the Indiana Fever superstar officially announced on Wednesday that her highly anticipated first Nike signature shoe, the “Caitlin 1,” will launch on Oct. 1.

The two-time WNBA All-Star debuted the pair on Thursday as the Fever hosted Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Wearing her new electric-blue Caitlin 1s for the first time, the 6-foot guard finished with 26 points and seven assists.

It wasn’t enough, though, as the Fever suffered a 108-101 loss to Atlanta, snapping their four-game winning streak.

Incidentally, Fever coach Stephanie White drew a lot of attention during the game. This was after she decided to make her own fashion statement on the same day Clark debuted her new signature shoe.

Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White busts out custom Nike kicks

More than a few fans are not happy with White right now. On top of the brewing narrative about her supposed disconnect with Clark, supporters are now calling out the Fever coach for allegedly attempting to upstage Clark on her big day.

White wore her own pair of custom Nike sneakers on the same day Clark debuted the Caitlin 1s. White’s kicks, which were shown and discussed during the broadcast, featured her name and her former No. 22 jersey.

White is now facing some backlash over her supposed untimely fashion statement.

“Do you guys realize how actually insane this is? She literally had shoes Frankensteined to be all about HERSELF as a past player and wore them during CC’s long awaited shoe debut,” a comment on X read.

“it’s your daughter’s prom night, and so you dig out your Gunne Sax dress from the 80s

it’s weird & funny,” a fan wrote.

“Many of the rest of the team wore Caitlin 1’s in support for the game. Boston’s blue ones matching Clark’s were particularly noticeable,” pointed out a supporter.

“You know, maybe SW is really jealous CC’s more talented and they’ll retire Clark’s 22 jersey instead of hers?” another said.

“This is sickening. She is so jealous and envious of Caitlin’s successful career. I mean she wants to be CC so back it’s pathetic,” declared a user.

“I think in a nutshell Caitlin is the player Stephanie always wished she could have been. It’s the only explanation that makes any sense,” a reaction read.

For what it’s worth, Clark has had nothing but good things to say about her coach. When the two went viral earlier in the season for a heated sideline exchange, the Fever superstar played it down, describing it as nothing more than a heat-of-the-moment incident.

Clark made it abundantly clear that she has her coach’s back. “I ride for Steph,” she said, noting that “Steph has my back more than anybody.”
