Tkachuk brothers united in Florida: Panthers acquiring Brady Tkachuk from Senators in blockbuster

The Florida Panthers, were, in fact, gearing up for a blockbuster trade.

It just wasn't for a goalie.

It was for Brady Tkachuk.

The Panthers are reportedly set to acquire Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators on Sunday afternoon, uniting him with his brother, Matthew, in a blockbuster trade that could massively shake up the Eastern Conference playoff picture and balance of power in the coming seasons.

In exchange for Tkachuk, the Panthers are sending a collection of draft picks to Ottawa that includes three first-round selections.

Among those first-round selections are Florida's No. 9 overall pick in 2026, as well as the No. 25 overall selection it acquired from the Seattle Kraken earlier in the day in the Mackie Samoskevich trade.

Ottawa is also getting another first-round pick in 2029.

There are a lot of layers to this trade and what it means for both sides.

First, there's the Florida angle.

It is an all-in, win-now move and adds another impact forward to a lineup that will be getting Aleksander Barkov back next season.

Combined with Barkov, the Tkachuk brothers, Sam Reinhart, Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, Anton Lundell and the rest of their depth it is going to be one of the best forward groups in the NHL.

The newly acquired Tkachuk (Brady) is probably a little on the overrated side at the moment due to his last name and the association everybody has to the 2026 U.S. Olympic team, but he is still a very good player. He is bordering on outstanding. He is one of the best possession-drivers in the league, a good scorer and one of the league's my aggravating players to play against, and putting him onto that Florida team will make it an absolute nightmare to play against.

But he's probably not the player you build a team around, which was the situation he found himself in with Ottawa.

The good news for both him and Florida is that he doesn't need to be that player with the Panthers. Florida already has that sort of player (multiple, in fact) on its roster, which will allow Brady to be the No. 2 or 3 player he is probably best-suited to be.

Three first-round picks is very a steep price to pay, but you also have to understand Florida's situation here.

  • The odds of any of those picks ever being a player equal to Tkachuk (even if he is a bit overrated) are slim.
  • Florida is in a win-now mode and Tkachuk gives them a chance to compete for a Stanley Cup right now.
  • Even after trading all of those picks, Florida still has multiple second-round picks in each of the next two draft classes that can also be used as trade bait, perhaps to acquire a goalie.
  • Those picks had way more value as a trade chip for the 2026-27 team than they did as actual draft selections.

From the Ottawa side, it's definitely going to hurt losing Tkachuk in the short-term, but it also clears a big distraction that was starting to build. There had been speculation about his desire to remain in Ottawa, and trade rumors were building. Especially after his brother (Matthew) and dad (former NHL player Keith Tkachuk) openly questioned Ottawa's usage of him during the regular season during a podcast.

Getting a boat load of picks back gives the Senators a lot of options and could put them in the driver's seat to swing another big trade to add to their roster.

They have been a playoff team the past two years, still have a good foundation and defensive structure, and now have some newfound salary cap space along with three first-round draft picks in this year's class, all of them among the top 25 picks. There is a path for another trade that brings a big-time player back, while still giving them more future assets.

Florida looks like a Stanley Cup contender again after this.

But Ottawa might have also just become the most interesting team to watch this offseason with what it might do next.
