Round of 16 loss punctuates Coco Gauff's exasperating week at Berlin Open

American tennis star Coco Gauff hasn't enjoyed her recent stay in Berlin.

Everything that could've gone wrong for Gauff at the Berlin Open went wrong. It started when she didn't get to play doubles with Serena Williams, one of her idols. Then, before her round of 16 match in singles on Wednesday, a fire alarm went off in her hotel, forcing her and other guests to evacuate at 3 a.m

Missing out on valuable sleep clearly played a factor in her match against Spanish star Paula Badosa. The 22-year-old looked sluggish in another contest she should've won.

Coco Gauff's round of 16 loss caps frustrating Week at the Berlin Open

Gauff lost to Badosa, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. It marks the second straight tournament where she hasn't reached the final round. She lost to Anastasia Potapova during the round of 32 at the 2026 French Open.

Many of the issues that have recently plagued Gauff — who hasn't won a singles title during the 2026 season — came back to bite her in Wednesday's match. If you guessed double faults, you'd be correct.

The American standout entered her match against Badosa with 188 double faults in 32 matches (considered poor). She double-faulted four times on Wednesday.

The constant questions about Williams created another distraction that Gauff, who hasn't been as sharp this season, didn't want. She revealed earlier this week that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion never contacted her about playing doubles.

The tennis legend explained she opted to play with Karolina Muchova instead because she assumed Gauff might not be playing in doubles, and she mentioned she would love to play with her at some point. (Gauff is playing doubles with fellow American Jessica Pegula.)

"I should've done better research on who was on the charts," Williams said after losing in the round of 16 on Tuesday, via Liam McMillen of Tennis365. "She's so focused on singles nowadays, you never really know [if players] are playing doubles. I should've asked her, though."

Gauff probably can't wait to catch her next flight out of Berlin. She had a week she would like to forget quickly.
