It was a good day for Kyle Larson Sunday at Naval Base Coronado, but the defending NASCAR Cup Series champion didn't have enough to challenge the 23XI Racing duo of Tyler Reddick and Corey Heim for the win in the closing laps.
As Heim took the lead from Reddick and went on to victory, Larson was in a heated battle with another 23XI battle in Bubba Wallace, trading third back and forth in the race's waning moments. Wallace ultimately took second with Larson finishing third after Reddick cut a tire with two laps remaining.
While it was an excellent points day for Larson, who is now fourth in the series standings, his winless streak is extended to 41 races going into the June 28 race at Sonoma.
"The 67 was coming," Larson told Prime Video regarding his race with Heim for the lead in Stage 3. "He obviously did a good job managing his tuff behind Reddick. Awesome stuff for Corey Heim. All in all, good day for our HendrickCars.com Chevy. Just need to keep swinging and it'll work out."
Larson has won at Sonoma twice in his Cup Series career. The California road course is only a little more than an hour away from Larson's hometown of Elk Grove, Calif.
