The Florida Panthers traded restricted free agent forward Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken on Sunday afternoon for two draft picks, including the No. 25 overall pick in the 2026 class.
The NHL Draft begins with the first round on Friday.
It's a fair return for Samoskevich, a talented but not quite finished product at forward, while it also gives Seattle a young player with some untapped potential who could still emerge as a top-line player.
But all of that is simply a sub-plot for what the trade could mean in the bigger picture of the offseason for the Panthers.
With the No. 25 pick now in their possession, the Panthers own two of the top-25 picks in the 2026 draft class (No. 9 and No. 25) and could be positioning themselves for a massive blockbuster move in the coming days.
It is not hard to put the puzzle pieces together here and see how there could be a potential fit between the Panthers and the Winnipeg Jets involving a Connor Hellebuyck trade.
The two picks alone might not be enough for one of the league's elite goalies, but it would almost certainly be part of the package.
We have acquired Tampa Bay’s 2026 first-round selection (previously acquired by Seattle) and a 2027 second-round selection (conditional) from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for forward Mackie Samoskevich.

Hellebuyck is not only a three-time Vezina Trophy winner as the league's best goalie, he also has an MVP award and just backstopped the United States to a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. That team also included Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, which could only further entice Hellebuyck to have interest in a move to Florida.
But what else would Florida have to give in order to get things moving?
Would Winnipeg insist on somebody like center Anton Lundell? Would Florida see that as a dealbreaker?
It's a lot of ifs, questions and hypotheticals, but it's easy to see how it all fits.
Florida may have been concerned about somebody offer-sheeting Samoskevich this offseason and wanted to get out in front of that with a trade.
That's possible.
But it's also hard to imagine the Panthers, an extremely aggressive, win-now team, looking to stockpile draft picks for something other than another big trade.
While the Panthers' farm system has been depleted in recent years and a couple of first-round picks could help restock some of that depth, those picks may have way more value as trade chips this summer. Especially when they have such a massive need on their roster (goalie) and one of the league's best players at the position potentially available.
