A.J. Brown weighs in on Patriots teammate Christian Gonzalez before training camp

One of the biggest acquisitions the New England Patriots made in the offseason came by bringing in star receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles

With that acquisition came naturally lofty expectations, and heading into training camp, the veteran receiver is already anticipating at least one specific matchup.

Brown was asked about the teammate he is most excited to compete against in practice, and his answer offered an interesting glimpse into how highly he views one of New England's rising defensive stars.

A.J. Brown praises Christian Gonzalez

“Gonzo, man. Great player,” said Brown. You know, hopefully everything works out (contract wise). I’m excited to get some work between him and [Carlton Davis] and the other guys, but Gonzo most definitely man."

For practical reasons, Brown is looking forward to these tests against cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Elite players will sharpen each other in practice, and you will not get any better preparation for the regular-season challenges than going against Gonzalez’s skills day in and day out. Brown vs Gonzalez whenever they are matched against each other in the 2-on-2's will be some of the best action of New England’s training camp.

A.J. Brown does not shy away from strong matchups

Brown went on further to discuss his admiration for Gonzalez.

“I love going against guys like that because those are my matchups and I don’t shy away from those,” Brown said. “So getting to practice against him and CD, that’s what you want.”

Brown's comments provide insight into a mentality that has propelled him to become an elite receiver in the NFL. His focus appears to be about the challenge and not necessarily easier opportunities, as he admitted he enjoys going up against top defenders. The objective for elite competition is not necessarily winning every rep. It is so he can measure himself against the greatest talent.

Iron sharpens iron

Training camp battles are often forgotten by the time the regular season arrives, but the matchups between Brown and the Patriots' top cornerbacks could be worth paying attention to. Brown has built his reputation by consistently producing against some of the league's best defenders, and it is clear he is eager to continue doing so in New England. If his comments are any indication, he views those daily challenges as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

For the Patriots, that mindset is exactly what they were hoping to acquire when they brought Brown to New England. Competition often brings out the best in talented players, and few training camp matchups will carry more intrigue than Brown lining up across from Gonzalez as well as Davis. If those battles are as competitive as Brown expects, both sides of the ball could be better for it once the 2026 season begins.
