Chiefs might get crucial Patrick Mahomes news before training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

The superstar quarterback tore his ACL and LCL late in the season, an injury that put his status for the season opener in jeopardy and would more than likely cost most quarterbacks games the following season.

However, Mahomes isn't like most quarterbacks. He went under the knife almost right after suffering the injury, and he's reportedly ahead of schedule in his recovery.

That's why Sports Illustrated insider Albert Breer believes the Chiefs may have to protect him from himself, as he might be fully cleared before training camp.

“Coming off a torn ACL and LCL and a December surgery, Mahomes was already working in install periods, individuals and 7-on-7 through OTAs,” Breer reported. “He’s trending toward being fully cleared relatively soon, but I’d expect Kansas City to be judicious with him early in camp—because when you tell him to go, he’ll go.”

Mahomes was looking as sharp as ever in some now-viral offseason workout clips, and he did as much as he could in the team's OTAs and minicamp.

He won't take no for an answer, but the Chiefs must think about the big picture and bring him back slowly to keep him healthy for when it matters the most.

The Chiefs should also address their wide receiver concerns by adding one of the remaining veterans, as they didn't do much to help their offense beyond adding Kenneth Walker III.

Whatever the case, Mahomes is trending in the right direction, and while he may not be as mobile early on in the season, it looks like they won't have to play a single game without their future Hall of Famer after all.
