To say that the Boston Red Sox have had a disappointing season would be an understatement.
Parting ways with manager Alex Cora didn't do much to help their case, and they're sitting at 31-44 midway through the season.
With the Aug. 3 deadline looming and the Red Sox struggling to find consistency, they might be forced to move on from some of their veterans.
Of course, that has raised some questions about RHP Sonny Gray's future with the team, and he knows a trade might be on the horizon.
“If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation,” Gray told the Boston Globe. “Whatever happens from then, only time will tell. But I would be open for a conversation.”
Gray has been one of the few bright spots at Fenway Park this season. Per Baseball Reference, he's sitting on an 8-1 record and a 3.12 ERA with 55 strikeouts, 15 walks, and 1.183 WHIP in 13 appearances and 69.1 innings of work.
He's logged at least sick strikeouts in four of his last seven trips to the mound, and he hasn't given up more than three earned runs in the past two months.
A proven veteran, the former All-Star could give any World Series contender a major boost for the rotation.
Ironically, that was also why the Red Sox traded for him this offseason. But with them struggling to find any sort of momentum, the former St. Louis Cardinals ace might be on his way out again.
He has a no-trade clause in his contract, but with no shortage of potential suitors, the Red Sox will certainly fetch solid value in return for his services.
