According to MLB reporter Ken Rosenthal, he stands firm on the notion that the Boston Red Sox shouldn't trade Willson Contreras if they want to remain competitive next season. This thickens the plot of the slugger's future.
But with the strong likelihood of an MLB lockout next year, it leaves a complex decision on what to do with the 34-year-old. Taking into account his age and whether or not his value will increase after this season are also factors weighing in on the Contreras conundrum.
Contreras has certainly proved his value, which has made him a hot commodity on the trade market that would provide the Red Sox a hefty return package if they were to trade him. But are the Red Sox willing to let go of their right-handed power threat for unknown prospects?
With the Red Sox sitting at the bottom of the AL East, looking to be sellers, the idea of trading the 34-year-old seems logical. But is trading away one of their prized assets the answer?
Ken Rosenthal on Willson Contreras:

“I don’t think they should be trading him if they want to compete next year … There are other things they can do. Sonny Gray, Aroldis Chapman, one of the outfielders. All of that for sure, and probably more.”

Despite the Red Sox's struggles this season, the three-time All-Star has been a silver lining, boasting a .282 batting average with 16 home runs, 44 RBI and a .903 OPS.
In a podcast episode of "Foul Territory," Rosenthal stated, "He's the one guy in the lineup who, from the right side, gives them power."
Contreras also provides the Red Sox with strong defensive stability at first base. Rosenthal also talked about how they have other appealing candidates on the roster who could be dealt. For example, Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman, who is one of the hottest trade candidates on the reliever market right now.
If there's a small chance that there isn't a lock next season, then the Red Sox would certainly want to have their offensive weapon stay. There's no doubt that the Red Sox need to make significant changes. However, Rosenthal's argument that Contreras is a reliable asset the Red Sox should build around would certainly benefit the team.
