Four-star DL Segun Alexander commits to Notre Dame over Clemson, Texas A&M

Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been racking up some big-time recruiting wins this spring, and the commitment of four-star defensive lineman Segun Alexander is absolutely one of them.

Alexander is a 6-foot-2, 295-pound defensive line prospect from Rabun Gap, Georgia.

Alexander took official visits this spring to Cal, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Vanderbilt.  He boasts nearly 30 offers but whittled his interest list down to Notre Dame, Clemson and Texas A&M.

Heading into a June 19 official visit in South Bend, the four-star revealed that he felt something different might be about to occur.

“Right before Notre Dame, I had two schools that I really liked, which were Texas A&M and Clemson,” Alexander explained to Rivals. “But going into Notre Dame, I had a feeling I was really going to like the school.”

Not only did Alexander really like Notre Dame, but he left that official visit with the Irish ready to commit. In fact, he was ready by the second day of his visit to make that decision, but the Fighting Irish really sealed the deal with a recreation of the Notre Dame player walk, which is a game-day tradition.

“It was after the player walk,” Alexander said. “When we got to the stadium and Coach Freeman was talking to us, it gave me goosebumps. It made me feel like I was already part of the team and getting ready to play for him. That’s when I knew it was the place I wanted to be.”

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Alexander is a three-star prospect, ranked as the No. 52 defensive lineman in the country. Rivals is higher on him, ranking him as a four-star and as the No. 48 defensive lineman in the country.

Either way, he finished his junior season for Rabun Gap-Nacoochee High School with 36 tackles (18 tackles for loss), 13 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Notably, Freeman and the Irish also won over Alexander's mom.

“Right after meeting Coach Freeman, she said, ‘Yep, this is where I want my son to be,’” Alexander recalled.
