Cowboys face another contract priority beyond George Pickens

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys have been in the news a lot for their situation with wideout George Pickens. The Cowboys opted to play with Pickens on the one-year franchise tag instead of locking him in for a rate now, and that's a controversial move, but also understandable.

However, aside from Pickens, the team shouldn't lose sight of another important extension they need to address sooner rather than later. Pickens isn't the only player coming up to the end of his deal that this team needs.

In a feature on Wednesday, ESPN discusses each NFL team's most important contract extensions. For the Cowboys, they highlight linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.

Cowboys need to look beyond George Pickens

In the piece, Todd Archer noted that "Pickens is set to play the 2026 season on the franchise tag as the Cowboys said they will not negotiate a long-term deal."

"If Pickens has another Pro Bowl season and Overshown remains healthy and produces, it would make for an interesting dilemma because there would be only one franchise tag to go around," Archer said. "Oh, and both players have the same agent, David Mulugheta."

That's a sticky situation.

This issue, though, is that Overshown hasn't been healthy. He's only appeared in 19 of a possible 51 regular-season games due to injuries. He also didn't play his full rookie season in 2023 due to a torn left ACL. But when he's healthy, he's an integral part of this team. The Cowboys would be wise to extend him, but at a price that's right for the team.
