The Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury went up against each other on Wednesday, but the game didn't get nearly as much attention as some of the incidents on the court.
In the second period, Clark had some contact with defender Lexi Held and fell to the ground. Held, DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas landed near Clark, but what shocked viewers is that Thomas appeared to press her fist into Clark's neck area while she was down, then stood up and appeared to step over her. There was no call on the play.
Clark left the game with 5:15 remaining in the third quarter. She didn't come back. It's not known if Clark leaving the game had to do with the incidents, but it's still getting attention across the WNBA.
After the game, former WNBA player Stacey Dales commented on the no-call on Clark in the game.
"Tonight was a pivotal moment in Caitlin Clark's season and career," she said on X, adding that "it's time the league takes notice and adjusts. It impacts a franchise."
"This is pathetic — not even loose ball worthy," she added on X as the game was going on. "League needs to review this. Completely uncalled for. And of course, they got what they wanted - Clark out for the game (back)."
She added in a separate post: "Watch the ball go in the opposite direction. And knee to the groin. This is a boxing ring apparently."
The WNBA is drawing criticism after ignoring that Clark incident. Clark had 19 points and eight assists before exiting the game. The Mercury won, 111-109. The Fever's next game is Saturday at home vs. the Los Angeles Sparks.
