The Minnesota Timberwolves are clearly trying to win a championship now and they haven’t been shy about taking the massive risks needed to capture the title. The team swung a massive trade for four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert in 2022 and then dealt former franchise player Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks following its first Western Conference Finals appearance in 20 years.
Although Minnesota made it back to the same stage with Julius Randle, its lack of a primary ball-handler made it impossible for Anthony Edwards to operate. After facing similar hardships during this latest playoff run, the Timberwolves stunned the basketball world Thursday by acquiring former Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets.
The blockbuster deal gives Edwards a bonafide star as a running mate, but this new-look Minnesota roster faces more challenges than it appears on the surface. The team had to part ways with fan-favorite big man Naz Reid to bring in Ball, and now, it faces a major culture clash between its two stars.
Although Edwards isn’t always the biggest adult in the room, he is extremely competitive and hyper focused on winning. Ball, on the other hand, has had minor off-court issues and plays a brand of basketball that doesn’t always seem to be conducive to success. Notably, he shot 19-for-48 and 5-for-24 from three, a measly 40% and 21%, respectively, across Charlotte’s two Play-In games earlier this year.
The star point guard has all the talent in the world, but his questionable shot selection and lack of maturity have been two things that have held him back to this point in his career. NBA insider Shams Charania appeared on television Thursday to explain that Ball is aware of the expectations in Minnesota and is eager to try and win championships with Edwards.

However, walking the walk is harder than talking the talk, so now, it’s just a question of whether Ball will make the sacrifices necessary to be great. For the first time in his career, he’ll be competing on a team with championship aspirations where his actions and his play will be under a much larger microscope.
There’s been some recent reporting suggesting that Edwards is growing frustrated with the direction of the Timberwolves, and while this trade could be promising, it could also be the final nail in the coffin.
Anthony Edwards is someone teams are keeping an eye on:

Playing with such a dynamic playmaker will surely take some of the defensive attention off of the four-time All-Star, but it also limits Minnesota’s financial flexibility and ability to make trades in the future. With Ball, Edwards and Gobert accounting for more than $100 million worth of cap space, the Timberwolves are essentially tying themselves to this iteration of the team for the next two seasons at least, after which Gobert’s contract expires.
If Ball is unable to become more efficient and conduct himself in the manner of a veteran player who is serious about winning, then this move could prove to be a disaster. There won’t be many ways to improve the team other than making drastic changes, so this enormous gamble needs to pay off for Minnesota.
They typically target players who have high character and great work ethic, so this stunning acquisition of Ball marks a stark deviation from that standard. Will he be the missing piece to take Edwards and the Timberwolves to the next level, or will be the final domino that sinks the ship and drives their franchise centerpiece away? We’ll start to find out in a few months when Ball and Edwards finally take the court.
