The Los Angeles Lakers are keeping Austin Reaves for the long run, and they're clearly building around Luka Doncic.
That might leave LeBron James as the odd man out, and he will most likely have several suitors in free agency.
Nevertheless, that doesn't mean he will consider signing with every team that covets him.
According to ESPN insider Ramona Shelburne, James will only play for a team with "a story." Talking on "The Dan Le Batard Show," she revealed James' only logical destinations, including one that was somewhat surprising.
“If you’re going to break up with the Lakers, you got to have a story,” Shelburne said (h/t Heat Culture). “There’s going to have to be a good reason for doing it. It can’t just be ‘because I don’t want to take a pay cut or whatever it is.’ Miami is a good story. Cleveland would be a good story. Golden State would be a good story. I wouldn’t have said Miami until they did this last night, but those 3 teams make sense to me … I wouldn’t say never.”

While a return to the Cavaliers has always seemed on the table, and the Warriors will reportedly be aggressive in their pursuit, going back to Miami would be surprising.
There were rumblings that James wanted coach Erik Spoelstra gone, and that team president Pat Riley told him to stay in his lane. Spoelstra and Riley are still there, so it's hard to imagine a return to South Beach.
That said, crazy things happen in NBA free agency every year, and James had his best years with the Heat organization. They have Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo, so adding James would certainly elevate their championship chances.
James will most likely take his time before making a decision. But story or not, watching him join a different organization at this point in his career might only hurt his nearly-flawless legacy.
