Former Cubs manager David Ross discusses potential interest in Mets job

Almost immediately after the New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza, multiple big names were mentioned as potential candidates for the Mets' full-time job.

Before David Ross earned his current gig of serving as an MLB analyst for ESPN, he was the Chicago Cubs' skipper from 2020-23. On Sunday, Ross spoke with Dan Martin of the New York Post about the Mets' opening.

David Ross would "love" to work for the Mets

Per Max Goodman of NJ Advance Media, Ross said that he'd "love" an opportunity to win the Mets' job later this year.

"I hope they call," Ross said about the Mets. "It would be nice. It would be cool."

Ross, 49, accumulated an overall regular-season record of 262-284 with the Cubs. While he guided Chicago to a first-place finish during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the Cubs failed to qualify for the playoffs across the next three campaigns before Ross was shown the door.

"I've gotten bench coach offers, but managing would be fun," Ross continued. "I hope I get another chance to at least interview. I was in a big market with no experience, and I think that served me well. And just having been in the dugout as a manager already, there's history of guys doing well the second time around. ...You learn a lot the first time you do it, and there are things you do differently."

David Ross shares what Andy Green will offer Mets as interim manager

Of course, one can only guess who the Mets will interview later this fall. It's also fair to wonder if Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns will still be employed by the club when such discussions get scheduled.

For now, interim manager Andy Green is leading the 35-49 Mets through what likely will be a disappointing summer for the club. Green served as the Cubs' bench coach from 2020-23, and Ross told Martin that Green is "one of the smartest baseball guys I've been around."

"He taught me a lot because he knows all the numbers, he's analytically savvy, but he also played the game," Ross added about Green. "The situation sucks because I know how much he wanted this season to work out differently, and he loved Mendoza, but I'm glad he's back in the dugout again."

For what it's worth, Green is not expected to be a candidate for the Mets' full-time job later this year.
